  1. On a national/international level, the new lp by the group Something Else, featuring Victor Herring, is really great. Fantastic cover of Jaco's The Chicken, amongst other really strong numbers. My buddy in New Orleans, Charlie Halloran, has a group called Charlie and the Tropicales that has a few lps out, mostly in the cumba, Latin American vein, and has a new one being released in early August that has Cyrile Amie on vocals. Finally, in my new home of Southern Spain, I'd highly recommend an lp by pianist Oscar Rifjberg, Reset, which has him and a revolving cast of young jazz players, performing his original compositions (modern jazz, but also has a flamenco element). Also from Seville, is a group called O Sister, that has been around for over 10 years. They started as a Boswell Sisters tribute band, and then morphed into a trad/swing group and now have merged into a more modern jazz sound with their recent lp, Brand New Day, featuring all original compositions by the group's 5 members (leader Paula Padilla also is one hell of a Bossa Nova singer).

  2. I followed the link in the cbox on the Lair suggested by wightdj: Jazz reviews: papatamusredux.com The review of The Jazz Ensemble of Memphis - Playing in the Yard caught my attention as it linked this 2024 recording to the to 1959 record Downhome Reunion: Young Men From Memphis - different eras but a similar groove.
